Day 25: Napoleon Will Rise

Listening to: "Glory" from Pippin

I'm really listening to "War is a Science" from Pippin, but there is no good YouTube video for it. Just go see the show. It's a good number.

Anyway, after a frenzied morning grabbing a new metro card, I decided to kick back and relax after class by--what else?--going and visiting Napoleon's Tomb. Well. That wasn't my original plan. I was going to go to the Army Museum that is next to Napoleon's Tomb, but the ticket people informed me that my student ID would only get me free admission to see the late Monsieur Bonaparte. Cool. I mean, you can't complain when you're not paying.

Sharing these photos with my friends, it was pointed out to me that Napoleon's casket is positioned conveniently to raise him from the dead. This could very well be a plan in the works. There's a creepy statue of him below, very Roman Empire-looking. And then there's a giant cross with Christ Our Lord and Savior on one end of the giant circle. (Bad phrasing, but whatever.) It seems to me that Napoleon, as well as somehow thinking he was like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, wants to emulate Jesus with an on-the-horizon resurrection.

All irreverence aside, it was a pretty amazing sight. All of the stain glass windows were stunning, and there were several tombs placed around. It was also relatively silent, apart from the clicking of shutters and the occasional shout from a small child. Descending into the "crypt" was also very cool, if slightly terrifying. In conclusion, the whole thing was very ostentatious, but as that suits Napoleon, I'm okay with that. Besides, it makes for good pictures and contemplative thinking.

Then, this gem posted outside of an AUP classroom:
